We went to this a nursing home in a little town called Avon. We were there to volunteer. We started with serving tea and coffee (or hot chocolate, as most of them wanted) to the people and had a little chat. Then it was time for exercising. this meant the elderly sat in half a circle and I threw a large pink ball at them, which they had to catch. When they caught it they had to answer a question, like 'What is your favourite food?'. Or 'What is your birthday?'. After that, we sat in a circle witth some people and talked about Halloween and Thanksgiving. I learned a lot from them!
There was this nice old lady in a wheelchair, who we brought back to her room. She told us a lot, and has taught me many things just by the way she acted, full of confidence, optimism and joy. She is one of the people you just get happy from by being near them.
Then, this other old lady asked us to come to her room. There she showed us all family photo's, which were really cute. The downside of it was that she told us some stories, that later turned out to be probably untrue, because she is getting demented. I find these things very sad, and they make me a little scared to grow old.
However, in our lunch break, Linda and I went to Walmart. I expected it to be huge, but it was even bigger! It went on and on and on, and had about every product one could possibly need. Imagine aisles as far as you can see, with products like bikes for kids, frozen pizza, sinks, shampoo and pumpkins. I wonder why we don't have stores like this in the Netherlands...
After lunch we got back at the nursing home. There we helped cleaning out the nursing home's chapel, which was currently being used as the recreation staff's office.
At 2:00pm, we said goodbye, and went on our way to Mary, Linda's mother, who s 93 years old. She has seen me when I was one year old and when I was three years old. Luckily, she remembered this, and she was happy to see me. And I was happy to see her too! We talked for a while, about everything, while sitting in her living room. It was good to see her again.
We went home for dinner, and then went to dance practice. This was being held in someones living room, which I found quite unusual, but it was fun to watch. We also did some preparations for coming Monday, when they start a course in making drums. I made 30 name tags, without names. I feel so proud of myself right now!
